Location: Room 2020, West Hall

Format: Session
Track: Free to Play Design & Business Summit

With the dominance of the saga-style gameplay and the stabilization of some core free-to-play models, strategies in the design of F2P games have solidified and we can now see some consistencies in the way in-app purchases have been integrated successfully across different genres of games. In this talk, we will look at a set of the most successful F2P games, from Candy Crush to Clash of Clans to League of Legends, to analyze what design principles they share in the way the game leverages the free-to-play model to keep gamers happy and make profitable products. A deep review of the shared features of these games, coupled with reviews of postmortems and interviews, demonstrates what our industry has learned about how players use F2P games and what kinds of play patterns and monetization components have become the norm of the current market leaders.

This talk provides the audience with an overview of the common features of the most successful F2P games, as a primer for designers working on their own games or thinking of entering the space.
