Don't Starve: Creating Community Around an Antisocial Game

Kevin Forbes  |  Programmer / Designer, Klei Entertainment

Location: Room 2001, West Hall

Format: Session
Track: Design
Vault Recording: Video

In early 2011, Klei Entertainment started development on a new IP game called Don't Starve. Having worked successfully with traditional publishers for our previous console titles, we decided to experiment with a different approach. Don't Starve is an uncompromising survival game, whereby players are thrown into the wilderness and left to fend for themselves, without any instruction. Through a rapid development process that was tightly bound to community building, Don't Starve went from a 16-hour game jam to a million-unit success. This talk recounts the game's development, from its concept to eventual success, describing its unlikely rise, and sharing both learnings and data around community engagement.

Takeaway

Attendees will learn how we used a radically open, iterative release process to build a large community for a new IP, and how we extended our tail through aggressive post-launch support.

Intended Audience

This talk is intended for developers who are interested in using modern communication channels to build loyal communities for new games.
