Powerful ideas lie within subject matter that may, at first glance, seem to fly in the face of fun. In this talk, we will look at player engagement as the result of conflict and resolution, challenge and success - a journey through a dynamic range of emotions that satisfies through depth and variety. We will share methods for using diverse and even difficult narrative subjects to inspire game and mission design, and in turn, to put the story in the player's hands by using design to take the player to narrative places that words alone don't reach.
