The Programming of Gone Home: How to Succeed by Being Lazy

Johnnemann Nordhagen  |  Co-Founder, The Fullbright Company

Location: Room 2005, West Hall

Format: Session
Track: Independent Games Summit
Vault Recording: Video

Laziness is just another word for efficiency! Learn the techniques and ideas used (and some that should have been used but weren't) in programming Gone Home. Johnnemann will share his experience as the sole programmer, shipping a successful 3D first-person game in less than 18 months. Attendees will leave with insight into effective tech prototyping, empowering content creators, time management, scoping and using external resources to reduce programmer workload, or increase efficiency, depending on who you ask.

Takeaway

Attendees will learn what worked in making Gone Home successful from a technical standpoint, including the decision to buy tech rather than use in-house creations, smart scoping tactics, when to write tools, how to effectively prototype features, and more.
