Startup Funding and Mentorship Programs: An Exploration of Game Incubators and Accelerators

Jason Della Rocca  |  Co-Founder/Indie Evangelist, Execution Labs

Location: Room 125, North Hall

Format: Roundtable
Track: Business, Marketing & ManagementProduction
Vault Recording: Not Recorded

Incubators and accelerators for the game industry are starting to pop up, and are funding and mentoring entrepreneurial developers. Largely adapted from more general web/tech efforts like Y-Combinator, programs to suit the particular needs of game development and commercialization are being established across the globe. Each program is set up differently, often providing much-needed resources like seed funding, dev tools and shared working space, along with a heavy dose of mentorship to fill the gaps in expertise of a startup team. Also, importantly, they provide business related support in terms of go-to-market expertise, access to press, publishers and investors, and general business development guidance. This session will discuss establishing incubator/accelerator programs and why they are critical to growing the game industry ecosystem. The talk will look at existing programs worldwide, and discuss success and failure cases. It will also explore some of the related challenges and unresolved issues of this model for supporting indies.

Takeaway

Learn about exciting new models for supporting and growing a startup/indie culture in the game industry. As a developer, you will discover a wealth of help to get rolling. As a program leader, you'll be able to share and learn with others working to support indies.

Intended Audience

This discussion will be relevant for everyone involved in fostering indie and startup ecosystems, particularly those running incubator/accelerator type programs (including managers, investors and the government). Most importantly, this will be informative for the developers and entrepreneurs who are considering joining such a program.
