The Importance of Nothing: Using Negative Space in Level Design

Jim Brown  |  Senior Designer, Epic Games

Location: Room 2005, West Hall

Format: Session
Track: Design
Vault Recording: Video

When is something that's not there more important than the things that are there? This talk will cover the role of negative space in design theory, and show its applications to both game and level design. The principles of negative space design can impact almost every aspect of a game's development and affect the way that players consume our games.

Takeaway

Attendees will come away with an understanding of what negative space is, and how to effectively use it in their game and level designs. Proper use of negative space is not only cleaner and more efficient, but can help to focus our players and improve their overall game experience.

Intended Audience

This talk is aimed primarily at level designers and artists, with secondary importance to game designers and even (to some degree) producers.
