Bite-Sized Storytelling: Creating Meaningful Mobile Game Narratives in Seconds

Levi Buchanan  |  Sales Director, Chillingo

Location: Room 3003, West Hall

Format: Session
Track: DesignBusiness, Marketing & Management
Vault Recording: Video

Story and mobile gaming are not mutually exclusive. However, the narrative structure of a AAA console game is not necessarily appropriate for devices meant to be played in "stolen moments." So how do you draw players into a story in just a few seconds? And can you even tell a meaningful story in the sliver of time in which a mobile game is played? Through the smart use of subtle emotional hooks, thinly sliced narratives, and tricks as old as visual media itself, developers can establish a rich story that pulls gamers into their worlds and creates engaging experiences in as little as fifteen seconds.

Tips and tricks for infusing meaningful story in mobile games in minutes, if not seconds. Examples of how to create emotional hooks that connect players to games. This session uses many game examples, not just ones from Chillingo.

Intended Audience

Mobile game developers. Writers looking to break into mobile. Producers wanting to fuse better story to their mobile games. Prerequisite knowledge of mobile storytelling is not necessary this session is designed to instruct.
