Minority Indie Startups Roundatble: Minorities and Startups

Sheri Graner Ray  |  Sr. Design Advisor, Zombie Cat Studios

Location: Room 120, North Hall

Format: Roundtable
Track: Advocacy
Vault Recording: Not Recorded

In the independent game scene, we are seeing an increasing number of startups headed by a person who is traditionally considered a minority in the games industry. This raises a number of questions. Are they finding this to be a way around some of the entrenched diversity problems in the industry? Do they find it easier to bring their ideas to the table in an independent environment? What is the make-up of their work force? Does it reflect the current conditions of the traditional industry or is this opening new pathways for minorities to enter the game industry? What is the response of investors? Are they finding success as fast as their non-minority-owned competition? Is it possible? Is it harder/easier for a minority? If so, why/how? What does your team look like? Where did you find them?

Takeaway

Participants will come away with information regarding the possibilities and opportunities that exist for minorities within the world of independent game company startups. They will have the opportunity to ask questions of successful minority startup owners and begin to build a network that will help them become successful.

Intended Audience

This is specifically targeted at minorities who are interested in exploring the opportunities and possibilities for them in the independent game startup world.
